Trafalgar beach goes blue - South Coast Herald
TOURISM minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk announced last week that 29 beaches in the country have been awarded Blue Flag status this year.
This was 10 more than last year.
Hibiscus Coast Municipality now boasts four prestigious beaches.
The good news is that Trafalgar beach will now be one of the top beaches on the coast. Blue Flag is an international award scheme, acting as a guarantee to tourists that a beach they are visiting is one of the best in the world.
It is awarded to those that have achieved the highest quality in water, facilities, safety, environmental education and management. Margate, Ramsgate and Marina Beach will keep their top status. Lucien, St Michael’s and Umzumbe beaches will join Hibberdene beach as pilot beaches. Having Blue Flag beaches is excellent for tourism as research feedback indicates that both domestic and international tourists value the quality assurances that Blue Flag beaches have to offer.
“As the number of Blue Flag beaches increases in South Africa, domestic visitors are increasingly exercising their choice in which beaches they visit and, as with international trends, our Blue Flag beaches are becoming the ‘beach of choice’,” said Ina Gericke, marketing manager for Ugu South Coast Tourism. She added that the beaches bring significant benefits in terms of improved environmental management of the coastline.

In her report she said that the preliminary costs of the programme would amount to over R138 million. Some of the projects under this programme includes a R30 million road network improvement, a R7 million pier upgrade, a R90 million parking garage, a R2.5 million boardwalk development, and a R800 000 formalised hawker area. She thanked the Hibiscus Coast Municipality for its considerable and continuous role as a partner in making the revamp possible. She also praised the community for its involvement, and said ‘once that happens, everything falls into place.’ Following through from last year’s mission, the MBA sent a motivation for the Urban Renewal Programme via the Ward Committee to the council on 6 August this year. It was also presented to the Building Control Portfolio Committee on 10 September. It was resolved in council that a steering committee, comprised of role-players, should agree on the phasing of the projects while the...
